German vinyl revenue rose 9.8% in the first half of 2026 and now makes up 47.8% of the country's physical music market, according to the Bundesverband Musikindustrie (BVMI), the German music industry association, in a half-year report published on 16 July 2026. Overall German music industry revenue grew 5.4% to €670 million (€1.221 billion at retail level), with the physical segment as a whole up 5.3%.

CD still edges out vinyl within physical sales, growing 0.8% to hold roughly 52% of the segment, but the gap keeps narrowing. Streaming remains the market's main driver, up 5.5% to 84.4% of industry revenue.

Germany's first half of 2026

BVMI's figures cover trade revenue for January to June 2026, compared with the same period in 2025:

SegmentChange, H1 2026
Total industry revenue+5.4% (€670m); €1.221bn at retail level
Streaming+5.5% (84.4% of industry revenue)
Physical segment (CD + vinyl)+5.3%
Vinyl, within physical+9.8% (47.8% share)
CD, within physical+0.8% (about 52.2% share)

BVMI credits the physical growth partly to strong album releases in the period. The physical-to-digital revenue split in Germany now stands at 13.6% to 86.4%.

Vinyl closing the gap with CD, not there yet

Vinyl's 47.8% share of Germany's physical market in H1 2026 is its highest recorded by BVMI, but CD has not been overtaken. BVMI chairman Dr Florian Drücke pointed to renewed label interest in reaching dedicated "superfans" with physical products and artist-specific releases as part of what is driving the physical segment's growth.

A format regaining nearly half of a national physical market, two decades after it was written off, is not a niche revival anymore.

A second straight year of vinyl growth

Germany's vinyl share has been climbing steadily. In BVMI's full-year 2025 report, published 26 February 2026, vinyl revenue grew 2.8% to €152.4 million, 44.2% of a physical market worth €345 million that had itself shrunk 5.9% as CD fell 11.3%. The jump to a 47.8% physical share by the middle of 2026 shows that climb accelerating rather than levelling off.

How Germany compares with its neighbours

Germany's vinyl growth sits alongside similar first-half 2026 gains that Sleevewise has tracked in France and Spain, each starting from a different base:

Germany's pace is faster than France's but well behind Spain's, and unlike either of those markets, CD still holds the larger physical share in Germany, for now.

What this means for collectors

A physical market where vinyl gains share every reporting period, even while CD still edges it out overall, is one where labels keep adding vinyl pressings and variants to releases that might once have shipped only as CD or digital. For a collector, more pressings on the shelf also means more editions of the same album to tell apart before buying or logging a copy.

Sleevewise matches a barcode scan or cover photo to the correct Discogs release, grades media and sleeve on the Goldmine scale, and tracks a collection's value from Discogs Marketplace listings, which keeps a fast-growing shelf easy to catalogue accurately.

Tracking a growing German vinyl shelf

None of this market growth changes what any single record is worth — that still depends on the specific pressing and its condition — but a physical market where vinyl keeps taking share from CD is one where it pays to know what your records are worth and to keep an eye on collection value as new pressings keep arriving.
